End of Term

What a fantastic end to a fantastic term.  Hopefully today, if you are a parent of a learner who attends the school, you have received a copy of the school newsletter.  If not there are copies on our website.  This should give you an idea of all the fantastic activities which have been going on in the school.

Today I was able to give out over 50 reading awards to learners in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9.  These badges show that the learners are taking part in the Accelerated Reading Programme and have shown their commitment to reading.  It was great to be able to give out so many awards.

At the end of the busy term it was good to catch up with all the learners who were heading off to America skiing and also learners who are going off on an educational visit to India.  We all hope they have a great time and that they gain a huge amount from the experiences on offer on both visits.

As you may also be aware we have launched a new rewards system.  This involved learners collecting VIVO points.  CONGRATULATIONS to 7E for winning the form group championship this term. Together 7E have accumulated a massive 19581 Vivo Points. The shield is engraved with 7E.  Dare to Achieve @ Emrys.

On Monday morning during the Year 7 assembly certificates were awarded to the following learners for the ‘Welsh Speaker of the Month’:

January: Dylan Murray 7M and Teigan Jones 7E

February: Olivia Jones-Humphreys 7R a Joseph Birch 7W

March: Taylor Watson 7M a Megan Sheppard 7R

Olivia Jones-Humphreys 7R was picked as the ‘Welsh Speaker of the Term’, as a reward Olivia can pick any prize worth 100 merits from the ‘Merit Shop’.

There have been many great achievements this term and many activities planned for next term.

Year Eleven are reminded that there are revision sessions on offer for different subjects each day during the Easter Holidays.  We really do want everyone to do their best and so please come in and make use of the sessions on offer.

Last week was a really busy week, and this week will be the same!  We have some great things planned for the last week.

Its good to see that Year 11 are really focussing on the work they need to do to be successful in their exams.  We have great hopes for the year group and look forward to them beating the records that the school set last year.  The revision classes for Easter will be shared with learners and parents on Monday.

Next week we have a group of learners who are preparing to go of the America skiing and learners who are off to India on a trip.  Fantastic experiences and I'm sure everyone will have a great time.  It's great that we have learners who want to get involved and great staff who are so willing to give of their time.

Last week we had five new applications to the school.  It really is great to have so many people wanting to join our school.  They are buying into the importance of the schools moto 'Dare to Achieve' and I am certain, with hard work, they will all do well.

We have a school newsletter out next week.  Look out for it to see a summary of everything we have been up to over the last term.

It has been another great week in Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan.  I know I say that every week but we have so much to be proud of...  I will share some of the highlights with you.

Attendance
We have had the best attendance ever this week.  We have offered 200 VIVO points to every learner who is in school for the next three weeks.  Year Eight achieved 98% attendance one day this week.  That's fantastic.  Keep it up and you will break all records !!

There have been some great Welsh activities this week.  Learners have been involved in Clwb Bore da and have completed some tricky challenges.  This is a club for first language welsh learners.  Follow their blog at http://cymraegemrysapiwan.blogspot.co.uk/

We have also had 'Enrichment Day' this week.  Learners were engaged in a range of activities to develop their skills and knowledge.  Again, a great day across the school.

During the Comic Relief week our KS3 learners have taken part in a variety of activities and have raised an amazing £573.50.

Some learners took part in a sponsored swim and competed as a form. During this week a total of 1068 lengths were swam. An impressive 26,700m or approximately 17miles.

We have also had some of our teachers out in the Primary Schools teaching.  This is great to get to know the learners and what they can do.  Mr Cameron has been teaching languages at Ysgol Maes Owen.

Finally, on a personal note, I had a great afternoon with the children at Ysgol Glan Gele.  They were a pleasure to be with and their school looks amazing.

Update...

Another great few weeks in Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan.

Last week we celebrated 'World Book Day'.  Learners were swopping books in the library and it was great to see the library so full and learners all talking about reading and books.  We really are starting to see a great culture of literacy across the school.

Learners in Year 9 and 10 have had their creative writing published after entering a national writing competition Mini MonologuesWord Weavers. Each learner wrote from the point of view of someone who inspires or intrigues them. Many based their writing on the character Shelter from ‘Stone Cold’ by Robert Swindells after studying the text in their English lessons. The pupils were encouraged to develop their writing talent by reflecting upon their enjoyment of reading the novel.

Tomorrow (Monday 9th March 2015), we have a special visitor who will help develop our literacy still further.  We also have an enrichment day on Thursday.  Some great extended learning opportunities for each year group.  I look forward to sharing the work with you.

This week we have been celebrating the learners achievement in gaining VIVO points.  This is our new rewards system to ensure that learners who do what is expected of them each and every day are rewarded.
